Training

Training in Motivational Interviewing (MI) can assist in obtaining the skills and practice needed to effectively use MI in practice. Training also allows for collaboration and feedback from professional MI trainers. Training was extremely valuable for completing the capstone intervention and I feel that the success of the intervention would have been hindered without training. However, the current evidence is limited  about training and the amount of training required to ensure that MI interventions are successful.

Jensen et al. (2011) and Heckman et al. (2010) found MI to be effective at a variety of different levels of clinician training. Other research completed by Lundahl et al. (2010) found that the level of training did influence the success of MI interventions. Additionally, Soderlund, Madson, Rubak, and Nilsen (2011) investigated the MI competence of clinicians. They found a significant difference between the experimental and control groups related to the participant’s ability to show empathy,use reflections, as well as support patients to change their behavior.

Based on the research and my experience, training can improve MI outcomes. Therefore,  completing training should be considered when continuing this capstone intervention.
